Nottingham’s Cornerhouse complex is bringing two brand new names to the city with the letting of two of the units previously occupied by The Works nightclub.

Letting agents Fisher Hargreaves Proctor have signed deals on behalf of The Cornerhouse with new Indian restaurant concept Tamatanga and International fitness chain Gold’s Gym. Both have taken space on the ground floor of the building, which was split into three in autumn 2007.

Tamatanga will open in the 4,207 sq ft (390 sq m) former ground floor bar area, offering its brand of ‘Urban Indian Dining’. A completely new venture, the Cornerhouse branch will be the first and flagship restaurant, offering customers affordable, fuss-free food that is nutritious and quick.

The 15,256 sq ft (1,417 sq m) basement area has been let to Gold’s Gym – the largest co-ed gym chain in the world and one of the most recognised names in fitness. Traditionally associated with body building, it now offers all of the latest equipment and services expected of a world class name including group classes, pilates and yoga, while maintaining its core weight lifting tradition.

Both units will be accessed from Trinity Row and overlook the new public square. They are expected to open towards the end of the year.

Suzanne Green, Centre Manager at The Cornerhouse, said, “We are delighted that both Tamatanga and Gold’s Gym have decided to join us at The Cornerhouse. I am confident that their unique offerings will appeal to our customers, providing them with even more ways in which to enjoy their leisure time.

“David Hargreaves of Fisher Hargreaves Proctor and Benoy architects in Newark have worked hard to re-design the space to give us the best solution and we’re now looking forward to seeing our new tenants shopfitting and preparing to open.”

David Hargreaves added, “I am pleased to see a brand as strong as Gold’s taking space in The Cornerhouse and completing the leisure activities on offer. In addition, to be the first location in the country for the new Tamatanga restaurant chain is equally as exciting and means The Cornerhouse now offers a full range of world cuisine.”

The lettings come as The Cornerhouse reinforces its position as the city’s premier leisure and entertainment complex with the announcement of record results for quarter one and the May Day bank holiday period. Footfall over the first quarter was up by on average 16% and the restaurants and bars showed very strong performances with takings up sometimes 15-20%.  What is encouraging is that despite the general gloom on the high street, The Cornerhouse bars & restaurant performances aren’t a one month blip but are consistently strong likely due to the strong cinema anchor. This month, for example, has generated very positive cinema numbers with Indiana Jones and Sex and the City opening at roughly the same time.

David Hargreaves confirmed that there is just one unit remaining within the former Works Night Club of approximately 10,000 sq ft which is appropriate for a bar/restaurant/late night venue at a rent of £125,000 per annum.
