Targetfollow, owners of Newark’s Buttermarket Shopping Centre have appointed retail specialists Fisher Hargreaves Proctor as agents for the Centre.

Over the coming months Targetfollow is investing £275k improving the 28 unit Buttermarket Shopping Centre in Newark-on-Trent.  The 23,315ft² Buttermarket, the town’s only indoor shopping facility offers a diverse range of quality independent outlets and well known retail brands, such as Jessop, Millets and Connaught House.  Two tenants have recently been added to the Buttermarket’s portfolio; Bubbles Bathtime and CAS Jewellery has opened a new store, the first outside of London for this established designer – offering contemporary jewellery.

Part of the Buttermarket is housed beneath one of the town’s most imposing buildings, the Grade 1 listed John Carr designed Georgian Town Hall overlooking Newark’s market place.

Fisher Hargreaves Proctor has a long association with both Newark and the Buttermarket.   The company was formerly known as Brian Fisher and Co and opened its first office on Appletongate in Newark and were also the original agents who launched the shopping centre in 1990.

Alan Howard, Portfolio Manager for Targetfollow commented: “The appointment of Fisher Hargreaves Proctor is key to our strategy for The Buttermarket. They have an excellent track record in the East Midlands, particularly in other towns and cities such as Nottingham, Derby, Grantham and Worksop and are responsible for bringing some quality retail tenants to those areas.”

Over the past two years high street names such as Monsoon, Accessorize and Starbucks have recently chosen Newark as locations for new outlets.

Fisher Hargreaves Proctor’s Retail Department is headed up by David Hargreaves and specialises in retail agency development and acquisitions, predominantly in the East Midlands.  Fisher Hargreaves Proctor is advising Westfield, the world’s largest shopping centre owner, on the £400m redevelopment of Nottingham’s Broadmarsh Centre.

Alan Pearson, Associate Partner at Fisher Hargreaves Proctor added: “The Buttermarket has huge potential and is in a great location within Newark Town Centre.  There is certainly a great deal of movement within the retail market in this area we just need to attract the right sort of tenants to the Buttermarket.”

Over the years the Buttermarket, which was first opened in 1990 as The Royal Exchange, has had a string of different owners particularly in the late 1990’s and was finally acquired by Targetfollow in October 2002.  Targetfollow owns and manages 60 properties, plus three other shopping centres as well as the Buttermarket; the Sky Dome in Coventry, Grand Central in Stockport and the Corn Exchange in Royal Tunbridge Wells.
