Ian Mitchell

Associate Director, Business Rates Consultant, BA (Hons) IRRV (Tech)

Profile

I joined FHP in December 2017 having come from a role with Nottingham City Council where I oversaw the Business Rates team who were responsible for the collection of circa £130 million p.a. as well granting appropriate reliefs and exemptions to ratepayers.  At the very start of my career I spent four years working for the Valuation Office in the London Borough of Greenwich. I knew Andrew Chapman and his team from contact I had with them whilst at the City Council and I am finding working for the private sector a fascinating contrast to local government.  I am of course putting the knowledge I gained whilst with the City Council to good use in reducing our clients’ business rates liabilities.

Current Role

My role primarily is to use my knowledge and experience from working on the other side of the fence to help our clients across the country, old and new, to reduce their business rates.  I am doing this by gaining exemptions and reliefs which many ratepayers are unaware of.  I am also an expert at deciphering rate demands from Local Authorities which sometimes seem purposely confusing!

Interests

Outdoor pursuits I enjoy are walking, including hillwalking all over Britain.  I also enjoy outdoor swimming, be that in the sea or open-air pools.  My wife and I have also recently joined Mansfield Petanque Club and I do play the odd round at the Ramsdale Par 3 if the weather is good.  I am a Francophile and enjoy all things French including speaking the language badly in the best British tradition.  As hobbies I paint in oils and make picture frames.
